Desperate to try out my new toy (Shimano Navi 8000xsb fixed spool reel) we set off for Neist on Sunday the 20th. Fairly large swell meant we were regularly getting drenched from rogue waves but still we persisted. Had a few decent Pollock about the 5lb mark on jellyworms but nothing on the beachcasters. Highlight of the day was my dad hooking a Pollock of about 6lb which he got to the surface only to have a seal erupt like an exocet missile from beneath and drag the fish (and almost him) back under, snapping the line. Stunned silence gave way to hysterical laughter and decided that was our signal to leave. Even got a nice send off from a smug looking seal.
The following Thursday we decided to try just north of Staffin. Wind was pretty strong but tide was quite small so we tried beachcasters with 8/0 pulley rigs fished with squid and mackerel. Pretty quiet to start with but soon managed a good haul of Pollock up to 8lb fishing with black and red firetail jellyworms. Pollock were almost all hard on the bottom, maybe due to recent weather? On last cast with the beachcaster I managed a Cod of 6lb which was a welcome addition to the day.
