Loch Portree is a realatively shallow loch on which the main town of the island is situated. Fishing here was in days gone by was very productive. Barrow loads of Cod and Haddock used to be the norm but sadly these days seem to be long gone. Fishing Loch Portree is best done from the Black Rock which can be clearly seen from Portree Harbour. Be warned - the Black Rock is tidal. You can reach it usually a few hours before low tide but keep an eye out for the flood as you can get caught out easily.
In the summer you can barely move sometimes for the Mackerel bashers here as it can be a productive spot. Spinning will produce some Pollock and Coaley up to around 2lb especially casting towards the salmon cages. Fishing on the bottom the depth isn't massive put expect to pick up an array of flatfish including Flounder, Dab, Plaice and Turbot. The usual Dogfish will be about and after dark there is the possibility of a Thornback Ray. Best baits would be Rag or Lugworm, Mussel, or fishbaits. Fishing a size 1/0 hook on a 1-3 hook rig is the best set up. There is no problem with tide here and the ground is spotless so do not expect to lose tackle.
Seals here are in great numbers and will come to within a few feet of you to do their nosy. Don't be surprised if you hook into a Pollock only to lose it to a hungry seal...
To get here drive out of Portree towards Staffin. Turn left at the sign for the Cuillin Hills Hotel and drive until the end of the road. Here you will find a small parking area. Park here and walk along until you reach the start of the black rock. In the summer this parking area can be busy so it may be easier to walk over from Portree itself.
